I was actually surprised. Normally I don't expect a restaurant attached to a chain budget hotel to be all that good.

If I had to describe this place in one sentence I would say that they are a bunch of really good cooks trapped in a terrible restaurant.

The interior is pretty worn and pretty average-looking, definitely not a fine dining experience. It looks like they keep it pretty clean, but there is only so much you can do with old carpet, outdated wall treatments, booths that are starting to get cracks in the vinyl from age, etc.

But, we turned up at 6 p.m. on a Sunday and the food on the buffet was hot, fresh , flavorful, with a lot of good variety in the flavors.

They also do a Mongolian Grill, which seems to be pretty much standard for Chinese Buffets these days, but they did a really good job. My grill plate was at that exact point where the meat is cooked but not dry and the vegetables are cooked but still have just enough crisp to them.

They have a tiny sushi bar which is mostly geared towards putting out a small variety of roles on the cold table of the buffet, but I was told that they will make rolls to order if you have a request for something on the buffet.

The rolls I tried were average to good. Normally you couldn't pay me to eat sushi I found sitting on a buffet table , but their chef was making very small batches and putting them out every few minutes instead of making large batches and letting them sit, so I was willing to give it a whirl --and it wasn't bad. Also, he sent the trays out covered in saran wrap to keep them moist and fresh. Bonus points there.

The standard soft serve ice cream machine (although there were no toppings chocolate sauce) delivered vanilla soft-serve that was about Dairy Queen quality. Normally the ice cream machines at buffets dispense watery milk flavored slushees that taste eloquently of despair and mediocrity, so I was happy.

    Downsides:

-Aesthetically speaking, someone should bulldoze the building and start over.

    - I can't imagine that anybody would go through the buffet and pick out most of the vegetables and leave most of the meat, because after all this is America and I do live in the south.

But, if I were describing this buffet as a crime scene, that is what I would describe to the sketch artist; "I think there has been a vegetable heist, officer." It was really GOOD meat, there was just a lot of various meats in sauces, lightly seasoned with vegetables.

    - The wait staff reminded me of riding stable horses... In the aspect that it's not that they're doing anything wrong or badly, or even with a bad attitude, but they are a living embodiment of a weary sigh.

On the other hand, this was 6 p.m. on a Sunday night at a restaurant that closes at 8 p.m., so I can't really count off for that because I also would look and feel the exact same way at that point.

    - The buffet tables seemed kind of ...small for such a large restaurant...yes, small in the sense of not a whole lot of different variety.

But also, I swear it was like some fiendish model-maker with a very strange sense of humor designed custom buffet tables at 75% of the normal physical dimensions of a buffet table, just to confuse patrons of that restaurant.

Good buffet for the price. Better in my opinion than the other Asian buffets in Harrison.
